Spine width: the formula our bindery actually uses.
Designers agonize over every panel of a cover and then guess the one panel that cannot be guessed. Spine width is not a creative decision. It is arithmetic, and this is the arithmetic.
The spine is the one part of a cover a designer does not get to invent. Trim size, typography, color — all choices. The spine is a physical consequence of page count and paper, and it obeys a formula our bindery applies every working day. Here is that formula, the numbers to feed into it, and the reason we still ask clients to confirm the result with us before any cover file goes final.
The formula, and the trap inside it
Spine width equals pages divided by two, multiplied by the caliper of the paper: spine = (pages ÷ 2) × paper caliper. The division by two is where most errors begin. A book is counted in pages, but a spine is stacked from leaves, and every leaf carries two pages. A 320-page novel is 160 physical sheets of paper. Skip the division and you lay out a cover for a book twice as thick as the one that will arrive.
Caliper is the thickness of a single leaf, in millimeters. It is the number that does the real work in the formula, and it is the number most people do not have.
Caliper: what the gsm figure will not tell you
Paper is sold by weight, in grams per square meter, but a spine is built from thickness, and the two are only loosely related. A fluffy uncoated sheet and a dense coated one can share a weight and still differ usefully in caliper. So the formula wants caliper, not gsm. These are the working figures for the stocks that account for most of our book production:

Treat these as planning figures, not gospel. The same nominal sheet from two mills — or two makings from the same mill — can measure differently, which is why the last section of this article exists.
A worked example
Take a 320-page book on 80gsm offset. Divide 320 by 2 to get 160 leaves; multiply 160 by 0.10mm and the spine is 16.0mm. For a paperback, that is essentially the whole answer.
A hardcover keeps the same 16.0mm block but wraps it in a case, and the case brings its own geometry: two binder's boards of roughly 2.5mm each standing on either side of the spine. The case spine for the same book therefore runs to about 21mm, before the small allowances for lining, covering material and the hinge gaps that let the boards swing. For case-bound work we issue the cover template ourselves, because those allowances depend on the exact board and the spine shape.
What a guessed spine does to a finished cover
A paperback cover is a single printed sheet folded twice, so a spine error moves both folds through the artwork. Guess too wide and the spine type creeps onto the front cover; guess too narrow and the back-cover color wraps around and shows on the spine, readable from across a bookshop. A centered spine title makes the failure obvious at two millimeters out. The causes repeat: a width borrowed from an earlier edition printed on different paper, a template recycled from another factory, a calculation run in pages instead of leaves.
Then confirm it against real paper
The formula will get your layout and your quote right. Before final artwork, though, ask the printer for the measured number, because the printer is the only party holding the actual making of paper. Our prepress desk calipers the stock reserved for a job, returns the spine to a tenth of a millimeter, and sends a cover template with the folds drawn in. The physical proof that follows is the final confirmation — a bound object whose spine you can put a ruler on before the run begins.
